90. Als mapes antics apareix el nom de Miquel Benezul en comptes de Venezuela

Sempre se'ns ha explicat que el nom de Venezuela procedeix de la ciutat italiana de Venècia pel fet que els conqueridors espanyols, en veure aquell país, hi van trobar una gran semblança en el paisatge. Tanmateix, els mapes antics escriuen Benezul i el seu derivat Benezuela.

A continuació us mostrem varis mapes del segle XVI on apareix aquest topònim:

Sembla curiós que tots aquests documents escriguin Benezul quan la grafia de la ciutat italiana, Venecia, escrita amb v baixa, era perfectament coneguda de ben antic. De fet, els mapes contemporanis al topònim Benezul escriuen el nom de la ciutat italiana amb v baixa. Aquí en teniu un exemple estret del mapa anterior:

Així doncs, a partir d'aquests documents, l'explicació oficial de l'origen de la paraula Venezuela podria posar-se en qüestió. No sabem què pot ser Benezul però el text següent parla d'un globus terraqui del 1578 on apareix el nom de Miquel Benezul. Potser era el nom d'algun descobridor avui desconegut? En tot cas, la catalanitat del nom de l'hipotètic personatge no ens ha d'estranyar.

Vividly enhanced with numerous sea monsters, sailing ships and geological configurations from obvious later periods. Claimed by the importers to be based on an original globe housed in the National Museum of Science in Florence. Hinged at the equator, the northern hemisphere opens to reveal a fitted compartment for spirits, glassware and bar accessories. Interior of upper hemisphere is likewise decorated with a heavenly scene patterned on the dome of a chapel in the Vatican. Equator and meridian scale decorated with the signs of the zodiac and other art. Full mount floor stand raised on turned wood legs ending with brass casters.
